The life of James Hutton and the revolution in geology that he started.

A readable account of James Hutton's life, concentrating on his geological work. This book makes you realise the amount of work involved in gathering the evidence for Hutton's views about uniformitarianism, particularly when all transport was by coach or horseback! A good insight into the beginnings of modern geology, although Hutton was not quite the objective scientist that we might imagine!
