This is the revised and updated version of a 1998 hardback. It gives a broad overview of the history of Mars observation and exploration, including the saga of the canals; apparently the planet was well known and its movements studied, as early as 272BCE.
The book ends with the current expeditions and plans (hopes) for the future. Written in non-technical language, and in his habitual easy style, Moore nevertheless lays out a great deal of detail about the astronomy, geography, geology and meteorology of Mars; there is a briefish discussion on the likelihood of life occurring. The book is aimed at the amateur astronomer and has a detailed Appendix on observing Mars, with practical advice for that enthusiast. Given that any book on our knowledge of Mars will be out-of-date by the time it is printed, which Moore himself acknowledges, this paperback is still a useful introduction to the subject.
Profusely illustrated with plates (colour and b/w) and line drawings in text. Comprehensive index, short bibliography.
