This is the 5th edition of an excellent textbook on archaeology. I imagine that it is aimed at A Level/first year undergraduate students but is equally accessible to a general reader.
Chapter One The Idea of the Past is a briefish run-through of historical periods, dynasties, civilisations etc, to put the science into perspective; those who don't want to read through the text can find a summary table provided. The following chapters then discuss the various scientific and technical advances which have created the practice of archaeology today, from surveying techniques to excavation, dating, analysing, authenticating. recording.
The book is well supplied with photographs, tables, diagrams, algorithms of all kinds and there are further reading recommendations throughout.
416pp paperback; b/w illus and figures in text. Comprehensive Bibliography, Index and Glossary.
