The Secret Life of the Natural History Museum

Dry Store Room No. 1 was a room found by Richard Fortey when he explored the back corridors and basements of the Natural History Museum after he started working there, and appeared to have been used to store a random collection of objects no longer needed for display. The author himself likens this book to the store room, being a ramble of annecdotes about the museum and its history.

Anecdotal though it is, the reader also gets a pretty good idea of what taxonomy is about, why it is important, and why the vast collections of specimens maintained by the Natural History Museum and similar institutions around the world are important. If you ever thought that this kind of museum was just a set of educational displays, this book will show you how wrong you were.

Recommended for a good read that teaches a lot without straining the brain!
