  • Air pollution by ozone across Europe during summer 2009
This report, prepared by the European Environment Agency (EEA), provides an overview for the state of ground-level ozone pollution in Europe, for April-September 2009. The report is based on the information provided by all the EU member states to the European Commission (EC), and is primarily concerned with measured concentrations which exceeded the threshold values set by the ozone directive (2002/3/EC). Information was also supplied by nine other countries (Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Serbia, Switzerland, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Turkey). Data provided from a total of 2171 monitoring sites includes : the locations where the highest one-hour ozone concentrations were detected; number and locations of exceedances of the information threshold value (180 μg/m³ of one-hour ozone concentration); number and locations where ozone concentrations exceeded the alert threshold value (240 μg/m3 of one-hour ozone concentration); the number and locations which exceeded the long-term objective (LTO) for the protection of human health (daily maximum 8-hour average concentrations of 120 μg/m3); exceedance occurrences of the target value for the protection of human health (daily maximum 8-hour average concentrations of 120 μg/m3 not to be exceeded for more than 25 days per year); and the dates when the most important ozone episodes occurred. The report is accompanied by several tables and figures and is available to download as a PDF file.
