Science File is an extensive science website and community. Our goal is to assemble the most comprehensive collection of science reference materials on the internet. Site features include 500 hourly-updated science news feeds for keeping up to date with the very latest in science, an extensive science website directory, science book reviews and science articles written by members, a science events calendar and more. We also have the internet's only categorised, searchable archive database of science news stories, which currently contains more than 9,000 links to science news stories on the web going back to the beginning of 2007. If you would like to chat about science in a friendly, relaxed environment, we also offer The Science Forums, a daughter site of Science File. If you are researching, you can access Intute and Scirus, two of the internet's biggest science databases, from within this site. We also offer a document library, image gallery and other features.
Science File is probably the internet's only science community where members can make important contributions to the site and have their articles published. We very much hope that you will join us and share our passion for science. All you need to be a member is an interest in science: our members range from complete novices through to professional scientists, so whether you want to keep up with all the latest news, research a particular area of science or write your own articles, there is something here for you.
To register, which is completely free, click the option on the Main Menu above - we shall look forward to getting to know you! If it's happening in science, it's happening at Science File.

International Year of Astronomy 2009
2009-01-06 UNESCO's International Year of Astronomy is here! This worldwide event aims to introduce people to their Universe and stress the importance of astronomy to science, culture and heritage. Here at Science File you can see what's going on in the Events Calendar, and if you are a registered member you can post IYA events to the calendar yourself. Because more than 130 countries are planning activities for IYA 2009, it's impossible for us to keep track of every event, so to that end we would welcome contributions from those outside the UK. As well as adding events to the calendar, why not write an article for Science File about IYA events where you are, or review an event you have attended? This year is a golden opportunity to communicate not just astronomy but science in general to those who otherwise might not come into contact with it. Experience has shown that there are many, many people who would like to learn more about their Universe but who don't know where to start. So why not help them out and give them a guiding hand? If you are an amateur atronomer, why not take your telescope into the street and show the wonders of the night sky to passers-by? You'd be amazed how many interested people you will meet. Failing that, why not get in touch with your local astronomical society and see what they are doing for IYA 2009?
If you are a Science File member, you can download many IYA 2009 documents, flyers, brochures etc. from the Document Library as well as upload your own. The main website for IYA 2009 is www.astronomy2009.org and there are links to individual country sites there.
What with 2009 being the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin, with many events planned for that as well, 2009 looks like being a fantastic year for science! You can keep up to date with all science events this year here at Science File. And as always, we'd love to hear from you about anything science-related you are doing this year. Simply click the "Register" option on the menu above to become a member of Science File.
New Feature: Image Gallery
2008-11-18Science File now has an image gallery, where members can upload science-related images in the categories of Earth, Life, Universe, Foundations, Technology and Miscellaneous. To use this feature, click "Image Gallery" from the "Features" option on the menu bar above. Then click "User Panel" to upload images. If you are not a member of Science File, you can view images in the gallery but not upload them.
As well as being able to upload images, members can rate them and post comments. We hope you will enjoy using this new feature and, as ever, feedback is most welcome. Should you have any questions about using the gallery, please contact us. Full Help pages about the gallery coming soon.
New Website Directory Category
2008-11-06There is now a new subcategory in the Website Directory in the Earth, Geology category, namely UK Geological Societies. This comprises details of geological societies in the UK. If you are a secretary of a geological society which is not in this category, and would like to publicise it on Science File, you may submit it by registering here and then clicking Submit Website at the top of any page in the Website Directory, or from the members´menu above. This, of course, also applies to any science society, be it geological, astronomical or anything else. You can also add your society events to the Events Calendar, and write an article about your society for publication on the site should you wish to.
